Returning Light

About Elaine Harvey:

As a child, I admired the watercolors of my mother’s sister Mike Smith, who was a professional artist in Miami Florida.  She gave me a brush and a few tubes of watercolor when I was about nine years old, and I was started on my nearly 80 year pursuit of art. We also brought home some of her cast-offs and I copied them, mistakes and all, and our home was decorated with them.  

Exhibitions:

Some of my exhibitions have been those of the National Watercolor Society, Rocky Mountain Watercolor Society, International Exhibition of San Diego Watercolor Society, Watercolor West, and the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies, As well as multimedia shows, such as Allied Artist of America.  

About Returning Light:

The migration of Monarch butterflies has long fascinated me, and Returning Light is part of a succession of paintings that refer abstractly to this subject.  The painting was created using acrylic and watercolor paint and a bit of collage in a somewhat experimental manner, responding to the action of the flowing paint as I went along.  There is of course the light of day encroaching on the dark of night, but also the hope that each returning migration gives.
