Congratulations to our
Award of Excellence Winner
STEVE HARLOW
Steve was awarded the second place for his
Oil on Canvas Painting
15 Park Row.
About Steve:
Born in 1944 in Los Angeles, I grew up as an artist, my social identity being the one who made pictures. On solo excursions to my local Museum, LACMA, I studied paintings from all eras, especially those of, then, recent modernists. In 1956, I was thrilled by an Abstract Expressionist exhibit of the New York School. In 1957 I saw an exhibit of paintings from the Bay Area Figurative School and gained direction from the paintings of David Park. Through college and beyond, I continued a focus on painting as I negotiated the demands of single-parenthood and many, varied, day-jobs.
About 15 Park Row:
During my second residency in NYC, this one from '97 - 2010, my day-job was as Lead Designer on JR.com, an e-commerce website for an electronics superstore in downtown, Manhattan. My office was in 15 Park Row, interestingly, the first NYC skyscraper (23 floors in 1899 - the tallest building until 1908). My painting of it references some of the photography of it I made during my time there.
