Presidents Statement

March 2026

I am getting to this late as we have been hectically working to prepare and finalize the SD Museum of Art Artists Guild-Atelier exhibit. It is amazing how many moving parts there are to a quality multi dimensional community gallery event.

The exhibition is at the Tularosa Gallery on 26th and Imperial Avenue, opening Saturday March 21, 4-7PM. In addition to the art of 17 Guild artists who have been working together as the “Atelier” for over 4 months to create work on the concept “One Day n the Life of Imperial Ave” a conceptual art intervention, this effort is being produced in partnership with the Barrio Artists Partnership, a community nonprofit working to create an arts district on Imperial. This event will kick off their campaign.

They have been funded by Prebys Foundation and agreed to provide $500 stipends to each artist for their effort. The exhibit will be up until March 29. It will then move to Gallery 21 in Balboa Park and, with additional new art, open April 7-20.

The Atelier is an ongoing effort of the Guild to create new opportunities for Guild artists to create and exhibit their art. In case you haven’t heard we have published and printed a complete catalogue of the art and artists for the exhibition. It was paid for by an unbelievable but much appreciate anonymous donation of $1200 by a fellow Guild artist.

In addition to the Atelier, board member Kevin Inman has initiated a Guild Artists Incubator. The idea of the incubator is to develop additional venues for Guild artists to exhibit and sell their work. Kevin will work to access various venues throughout San Diego who agree to exhibit artists work without a formal, competitive curatorial process and without a formal event opening, for various periods of time for the purpose of selling the art.

To date he has identified three locations. Further information will be available by email to members and/or the web site. Kevin also continues the monthly figure drawing classes at MOPA. In addition, he has agreed to recruit both models and artists to participate in the Museums Art Alive exhibit with models in costume strolling through scheduled events and activities available to be sketched. Stay tuned for that! (April 25-26).

The Exhibitions Committee has been hard at work negotiating new galleries for curated exhibitions. They have signed on with Union Hall in San Diego for a June exhibition, “The Art of Now “in June. They are negotiating for a membership-only exhibition at Shift Gallery for November. Our regular International Online Exhibition will be held in the fall as well. Negotiations are also underway for April for an exhibit in Escondido.

And much more to come as board members work diligently with the goal in mind “created opportunities for Guild members to exhibit (and sell) their every imaginative art”.

Finally, and I’ve saved the best news for last the Board at its March 3 meeting unanimously appointed a new board member Jennifer Byrne. Jennifer has jumped right in with her amazing graphics skills and prepared the artists’ images and narratives for publication and had a major role in designing the whole catalogue. February 3, we saw a marathon Guild Board of Directors meeting, lasting an hour over time. The meeting includes regular business items like minutes presented by John Ohl Secretary who also writes poetry. Then comes Barb Leitzel with the treasurer’s report. The Guild manages a wide-ranging budget from membership dues to funding for One Hundred Artists-One Hundred Years scheduled for publication within two months. Watch for the opening event. The board meeting was opened by remarks by Lucas Perez Manager of Art and Empathy Programs, Projects, and Innovation of the Community Engagement Department of the Museum. His exhibit of historical moments of the 100 year old museum are on display at the Museum.

Next up is the membership Committee Chair, Angelika Villagrana who presented a slide show of new Guild applicants, resumes and images. Then the board, all artists, have a deep and considerate discussion evaluating each artist’s work, resume, etc. Voting is confidential and extends into the next day.

Then, the Exhibitions Committee Co-Chairs, Lelsie Pierce and Kevin Inman report on the conclusions of a previous committee meeting. The members have been investigating and evaluating future exhibition venues, curators, dates, budget, options, themes, member vs open invite, online vs in person. Board members visit each location and report back on impressions and budget. Then came scrutiny of three additional exhibition venues and schedules for Guild artists. Two were voted on and details will be forthcoming. The third is going back to the committee meeting for further exploration. We have booked for three exhibits in 2026 and adding new venues for 2027 already.

Next up was a review of work by the Atelier and the “One Day in the Life of Imperial Avenue” where 17 Guild artists have been laboring for six months to interpret and create art based on their visceral impressions while walking the street. The board was elated to hear that an anonymous Guild artist has donated $1250 to produce a catalogue of the exhibit. Guild artist Jennifer Byrne is assembling the collective images and words of participating artists. The exhibit will be from March 20-28 with the opening reception on March 21. You will receive details of the numerous panels and artists talks that will take place during the exhibition at Tularosa Gallery 2602 Imperial Ave.

Kevin Inman reported on the successful involvement of both Guild and interested artis in the life Drawing session at the Museum monthly. Check the Guild website or you most likely have received an email with details. Kevin also introduced a concept for the Guild to search out good art venues and exhibit spaces for Guild artists to show work separate from our regular curated exhibits. The idea for an “Artists Opportunity Initiative” will be forthcoming by the committee and board.

Finally, came the historians report with images and highly informed narrative from Jody Abssy. These ongoing summaries of all the Guild is doing are fascinating and add to the illustrious history over 111 years. A number of these historical photos will be on display at the Grand Museum Birthday event in Balboa Park where the Guild will staff a booth distributing tote bags, selling exhibit catalogues and answering questions. The event is February 28 in the central plaza opposite the museum from 3:30-7:30. Stop in a say hello.

Finally, the board president had attended a meeting of the Museum Support Council and reported back on the unique place the Guild has in the community infrastructure of the museum. It was duly noted by the committee that the Guild has contributed over $70,000 to the Museum over the past ten years and donated a major work of art. It was announced that the Museum over the next four years will be using all exhibit space to feature the Museums vast collection of art.

President's Statement - December 2025

Well, here we are closing in on the end of 2025. For the Guild, it has been an exciting year headed by our members exhibition at the Museum of Photographic Arts Gallery (MOPA@SDMA), curated by Dr Hugh Davies from the Contemporary Art Museum (emeritus). We also just finished our members only exhibition at Gallery 21 in Balboa Park, curated by local gallery owner Johnny Tran - Thumbprint Gallery. With super prize-winning art and eclectic surprises in style, concept and medium. the International Online Exhibition, which closed on November 15, drew over 700 entries from around the world, but our members dominated the selections by Dr. Amy Galpin of the University of Miami as curator.

The long-planned book “100 Artists-100 Years,” edited by board member Mark-Elliot Lugo, and ably assisted by Guild Historian Jody Abssy, is undergoing excruciating detailed fine design by Mark and should be published in time to add to The San Diego Museum of Art 2026 Centennial celebrations. Exhibitions of some of the works in the book are also under discussion with the Central Library and other academic venues in the region. There is high demand in the academic community for hundreds of copies for its unique historical and cultural value.

Kevin Inman continues to host monthly figure drawing classes with Museum staff with a mix of Guild members and others attending. Kevin has also hosted several on-site plein air painting sessions with open enrollment. Kevin also manages our online presence, helps build exhibitions (i.e. International Online/Gallery 21 exhibitions) and serves as the Guild vice president.

The Guild has also initiated a groundbreaking experience in the formation of an “Atelier.” The Atelier is intended as a hands-on exercise /dialogue between Guild artists interested in experimenting with “conceptual” art projects. The important one going on now is “One day in the life of Imperial Avenue” in partnership with the Barrios Artists Partnership (non-profit). Twenty Guild artists will create their impression of life on Imperial Avenue and receive a $500 stipend. An exhibition of the collective artwork will be (tentatively) from February 14-22nd at a gallery on Imperial Avenue. The Guild involvement is part of an effort to develop the Imperial Avenue Arts District by the Partnership. This project is an exciting experiment in art and community engagement for the Museum.

Board member Leslie Pierce is knee-deep in organizing an exhibit on the theme “The Art of Now” at the Union Hall Gallery in Golden Hill, near downtown San Diego. She has short listed a distinguished list of potential curators, leased the space, and designed a prospectus which will invite artists throughout California. The tentative opening date is June 2026.

Additional exhibitions for Guild members are in the planning stages, including a return to Gallery 21 (pending parking rules) in Balboa Park.

Finally, Guild President Jim Bliesner (with board approval) has drafted and submitted a request to Deidre Guevera, Director of Community Engagement for the Museum, for a Biennale Exhibition (every two years) over the next ten years. The proposal suggests that such a declaration would provide a signature event for the Museum's Centennial celebrations, The primary argument is that the Guild and member artists are a constantly evolving phenomenon and that a benchmark exhibition highlighting this evolution would be distinctive. From artist dues and fees, the Guild has donated over $70,000 to the Museum's regular programming during the past ten years and would help defray the costs of an exhibition every two years.

Finally. TAKE NOTICE! Museum membership fees will increase in 2026. You might want to renew your Guild and Museum membership before the end of the year to avoid this increase.

Here it is with the month half over and finally some time to summarize where things are at. Most of the information about exhibitions etc. is on the web site already thanks to Kevin Inman and Lily Tanzer. The volunteer hours of these two and all the board members is significant, and it doesn’t stop…upwards of a thousand monthly. Angelika keeps track and submits monthly reports to the Museum as they get credit for them in their grant writing.

The International Art Exhibit had over 700 entries and of those 21 Guild artists and 2 Associates were juried in. Charlene Moseley received an “Honorable Mention” award. Entries were from all over the country and many from other countries. The upcoming Gallery 21 exhibition will take place from Nov 4-17. Curator Johnny Tran will announce recipients on October 20. Good luck. Awards will be given. The opening is Nov 9th.

Exhibition Committee Co- Chairs, Leslie Pierce and Kevin Inman are hard at work in building for a proposed Union Hall exhibit in June of 2027. The amazing space is at 2323 Broadway. The theme for the exhibition is “The Art of Now; Pushing Boundaries” which is the brainchild of Leslie, as is the current negotiation with the Museum and the Gallery over rental agreement, liability insurance etc. all of which requires a signoff by the SD Art Museum which of course involves Angelika. Kevin will be coming on board to deep dive into the many other details that staging an exhibit entail. Unfortunately, I have had to be in Paris for two weeks so have not been of much help.

The ”Atelier” is in full swing as well. Our next meet up is Oct 16 and will happen at Imperial Avenue. 17 Guild artists have signed on to create work on the theme “One Day in the Life of Imperial Avenue” and will receive a $500 stipend to compete and exhibit work. This effort is in partnership with the Barrio Artists Partnership a local non-profit that is engaged in creating the Imperial Ave Arts District. Potentially an exhibition of completed work will be developed as well.

The twice a month figure drawing workshops are happening at the SD Art Museum studio spaces in Balboa Park. Meeting times and date will be on the website.

I missed July so this should catch everyone up. Hurry, the deadline for the Guild online juried exhibit is AUGUST 13. The distinguished juror is Dr Amy Galprin, the Executive Director and Chief Curator at the Miami Dade Museum of Art and Design. She recently debuted a major retrospective on Celia Cruz the venerable Cuban performer. $1,000 first place, $500 second place, $300 third place and four honorable mentions at $50 each. Now you may ask where does that money come from? The Guild prides itself on creating and managing opportunities for its members. Your dues and fees are used to create, fund and reward its member artists all by a volunteer, hard-working board of directors. I sure hope I get juried in.

Our next exhibit will be at Gallery 21 in Spanish Village/Balboa Park. Keep an eye on our website for announcements.

In addition, Guild board members Kevin Inman (noted plein air artist and world traveler) and artist Lelsie Pierce (studio Liberty Station) have created two life drawing classes a month, one in the Prado classrooms in Balboa Park and another off site. Your dues pay the model. Kevin also manages the web site in his spare time. Leslie also codirects our monthly atelier workshop with Jody Abssy (our Historian).

You would be inspired by the buzz we are generating monthly at our Atelier sessions. For 3 hours once a month and six hundred site visits, emails, texts, phone calls, coffee chats we are conceiving a conceptual installation on “Nonsense”. AND, speculating on additional installations on concepts …well you need to be there to understand them. Does anyone have a vacant store front or gallery we can use to install for a few weekends? Board member Lunjia Hu is exploring the UCSD campus for us. Stay tuned and/or join in. Next session August 21 at MOPA building in Balboa park -11:00 sharp.

Another Guild dialogue session happens when long time board member and multi term President Angelika Villagrana hosts a monthly Art Exchange Zoom Call (August 9-10:00-12:00). Come and share your art, answer and ask questions about ideas, materials,etc.. We see some amazing art there.

Note, Guild artists are exhibiting everywhere. List your latest show and see what others are doing on the web site, Thanks Lily Tanzer, Angelica, and Kevin et al for keeping us all informed. Also the board was pleased to jury in new Guild artist Megan Bishop as an associate member and are right now voting on three new applicant artists. 114 artists have joined or rejoined starting June 30. Artist Guild News for June 2025 - Membership renewal and San Diego County Fair Winners

MEMBERSHIP ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Please note that membership renewal notices for our new fiscal year (July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026) will be e-mailed to our members on July 1. Since The San Diego Museum of Art takes care of our accounting and operates under a zero-based budget, all our funds will be moved over to the Museum's operating budget on June 30, and we will have to start with zero money on July 1.

Therefore, please do not renew your membership before July 1.

As I mentioned during our General Meeting, we will be able to transfer

close to $5,000 to the Museum on June 30.

We very much hope that you will continue your membership with the Guild.

Atelier/Workshop Initiative - led by Jim Bliesner

The Initiative was established in January 2025 to begin an exploration about future “pop up” exhibitions or collective installations. The group meets monthly at the MOPA@SDMA Building in Balboa Park. After much discussion, the group decided to create a "Nonsense" Exhibition/Installation at Graffiti Park on the UCSD Campus. The concept will be developed further in upcoming meetings.

The next meeting will take place on Thursday, June 26,

Our Monthly Artists Guild Discussions Meetings, led by Angelika Villagrana, on the second Saturday of each month, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon Pacific Time, will continue via Zoom. These monthly meetings have attracted members and guests from all around the United States, Canada, and even Germany, France and Italy. June 2025 President's Statement

It's that time of the year again when Guild members get to elect their board of directors. We look forward to your participation in the June 14th Zoom call. The board has voted on officers with me to continue as president, Kevin Inman as vice president, Jon Ohl Webster as secretary, Barbara Leitzel as treasurer. The exhibitions committee will be co-chaired by Kevin Inman and Leslie Pierce, while Angelika Villagrana will continue as membership chair and recruiting volunteers to assist.

We have two exhibitions planned and locking in on the 3rd at Union Hall led by Leslie Pierce. First, is the online exhibition from September to October, with an entry deadline of August 13, which is an international invitational and will be curated by Dr. Amy Galpin, Executive Director, Miami Dade College Museum of Art and Design. The second show is at Gallery 21 in Spanish Village in November, which is members only, and it will be curated by Johnny Tran, the owner of Thumbprint Gallery in La Jolla.

Congratulations to the four artists who sold work at the recent PHES Gallery exhibition in Carlsbad.

We are honored to have had Julianne Ricksecker on the board for many, many, years. You cannot imagine how much she has contributed to the Guild's functioning. She will be greatly missed in that role, although she will continue as a member.

The board juried in two new artists in June, Jeney Hansen and Bruce Nihill, both painters. This brings Guild membership to 154 artists including associate and student members. Angelika does an amazing job keeping track of us all.

Also, at the June meeting the board allocated $700.00 for materials, fees and supplies for the workshops (figure drawing and plein air) led by Kevin Inman. Other funds will be used by the Atelier in its pursuit of a conceptual art installation on the concept of "nonsense" for its beginning effort. These working groups are open to all.

The Atelier will next meet on June 27th from 11:00 to 2:00 at MOPA. Two additional workshops are being scheduled with museum staff. Stay tuned.

It appears that we will be donating about $5,000 at the end of our fiscal year (June 30) to the San Diego Museum of Art. The Guild is the largest contributor to the San Diego Museum of its numerous support councils. In addition, we also are members and participants in the Museum programs, especially the community engagement efforts.

May 2025 President's Statement

The big excitement this month was still the Artists Guild member exhibit at the Phes Gallery in Carlsbad. It is an outstanding group of work juried in by gallery owners Paul Henry and Ellen Speert and to date has registered four sales.

We added two new artists in May, Kai McCarty and Edwin Tuazon. In addition, we have appointed two new board members who, like all of the board, will be standing for election by the full Guild membership in June. We welcome Arlette Stella and Vira Ustianska to the board and appreciate their willingness to assist.

The regular exhibitions that the Guild develops have been supplemented by new initiatives. The “Atelier” has had its third meeting and are diligently focused on developing a “conceptual” work, brainstorming concepts, sites, materials and gradually construction. The Atelier has been meeting on the third Thursday of each month at the Museum of Photographic Arts building in a workroom graciously provided by the Museum. In addition to the brainstorming the group engages in a hands-on art making activity led by Leslie Pierce and Jody Abssy.

New educational workshops have also begun to percolate to the surface with Kevin Inman and Leslie Pierce working with Museum education staff to create a life drawing class (May 20). Kevin is also convening a plein-aire session at the Villa Montezuma in Sherman Heights on May 22^nd. All members and the public are invited.

Julie Weaverling (a new grandmother) who engineered the Phes exhibit has also submitted the Guild video from the Highlights exhibit, along with Guild artists work, to the SD Airport New Terminal Inaugural Exhibition. It is competitive and hopefully her good work will prevail.

The Guild member exhibit for next year at Gallery 21 is locked in as is the Online International Exhibition. Curators have been selected for each. The board meeting for May was electric with discussions about additional exhibits for 2026. Stay tuned. You will be excited about the possible locations and ideas for future exhibits. But they all take a lot of hard work. And speaking of hard work... Leslie Pierce dramatically represented the Guild in playing a major role in mounting the large LA artist fire victim fund raiser event at the Union Hall Gallery. Over $40,000 was raised and Guild members were ever present volunteers (Angelica, Jody, John). Over 400 works of art were donated including work by 21 Guild members.

Finally, we have been nominated to receive the sParks Award from Forever Balboa Park along with other organizations. Their decision will be in Mid-May. The award is for organizations contributing to the vitality of Balboa Park and crossing boundaries. The nomination states “A practicing artists, architects, sculptors, we confront the formidable boundary between imagination and reality on a daily basis.”

One exhibit finished (Highlights from the San Diego Museum of Art Artists Guild at MOPA) and another about to begin (Phes Gallery in Carlsbad – April 6-May 3) 47 works of art have been selected from 135 entries. The opening is April 6^th -. Exhibiting artists in the Highlights exhibit held an informal farewell reception on March 6^th and it was a grand farewell to an outstanding exhibit of Guild artists’ work. The range and quality of work was exceptional. 2025 will also include the Online International exhibit (August/September) and the Membership Exhibition at Gallery 21 (Nov 4-17). I am looking forward to continued Guild artist creativity and exploration of style, medium and ideas

Toward that end we have initiated a new project for Guild artists, soon to be artists and collaborators, the Guild Atelier. We have scheduled sessions in the MOPA Museum building in Balboa Park on the third Thursday of every month from 11:00 to 2:00 (except March when we will meet March 27 instead). In February Julie Weaverling lead us in an “imagining” session. The purpose was to freely suggest venues, concepts, installations, audiences, participants, etc. We will continue this exploration at the March 27 Atelier. Jody Abssy and Leslie Pierce have stimulated us with curious and innovative group art exercises

Another interesting experiment we are pursuing is in collaboration with the SD Museum of Art Community Engagement staff and muralist Mario Torero, a community engagement mural in the Sherman Heights neighborhood near downtown SD, Several Guild artists and sculptors are on board with this effort including myself. Presentations were given by me on community engagement installations and John Ohl Webster on his conceptual art installation in Escondido.

Guild artists and board members, Leslie Pierce and Kevin Inman are collaborating with the Museum staff in the development of an art workshop program. Potentially this will involve Guild artists as instructors for up-and-coming art students.

I hope everyone is taking their friends to see the great Highlights Guild exhibit at the Museum of Photographic Arts. Dammyer Gallery. It remains on exhibit until March 9. Artists in the exhibit please mark that date for art pick up. Catalogues are still available in the MOPA bookstore. Mark Elliot Lugo has placed six copies at the Central Library which will allow artist biographies to be accessible on the library site. Kudos to Mark! The video of the exhibit is now available on YouTube. A second video will soon be posted focused on the indelible footprint of Guild artists on the San Diego cultural landscape. We are hoping to continue to feature Guild artists in the studio, etc. over the coming years. Many thanks to Leslie Pierce for featuring Guild artists regularly on Instagram and Angelica for posting the regular ZOOM discussion group artists on Facebook.

If you are not in that show the Guild offers another opportunity with the recent release of the prospectus for the Phes Gallery Exhibit for Guild members only. This is an excellent Carlsbad venue, but space is limited so get your work in soon. Deadline is March 31,2025 and the exhibit will be up from April 6-May 31.

Our Online International Exhibition is planned for August -September 2025. This is open to all artists. Finally, Angelica has come though yet again for us and has scheduled an exhibition for Gallery 21 in Spanish Village. Stay tuned.

A few months ago, the Board approved an effort to create an Atelier/ Workshop Initiative. Thanks to the assistance of Lucas Perez-Museum Artist Guild Liaison. we have received permission from the San Diego Museum of Art to use a space in the MOPA building. We held our first session, and it was attended by 13 artists. Leslie Pierce led the group with an Expressionist group design session. Jim Bliesner and Mario Torero Acevedo presented an update on the Sherman Heights Mural/community engagement project being conducted with the participation of Deidre Guevera, Director of Community Engagement for the Museum. Discussion regarding the involvement of Guild artists followed. That was followed by a discussion about future “pop up” exhibitions or collective installations.

The room is available for one day per month, with additional time available. We will split the time between using the space for a workshop (ie life studies, various painting, sculpting and printmaking methods etc.) and using it to develop group conceptual art projects and exhibits. Currently we do not have a hook up for zoom participation, but we are working on it. If you are interested in attending the February 20 atelier/workshop message me.

Artists Guild Holiday Party

On December 1 the Guild hosted its Holiday Party at Gallery 21. It was a joyous event and John Ohl played Santa in his California garb!

Members gathered to share food, conversation, and a festive afternoon with fellow artists.

Guild Historian Jody Abssy created and presented an Anime book for Angelika Villegrana (holding many positions and wearing many hats throughout the years) in appreciation for all she does for the Guild and its members.

The book was an expression of appreciation that all Guild members feel toward Angelika.

Dear Members of the Artists Guild;

WOW, what a month! First, the big opening at the new Dannmyer Community Gallery on November 12, 5:00 to 7:00pm, with a full contingent of Museum staff lead by the Director Roxanna Velasquez and Community Engagement Director Deirdre Guevara and Lucas Perez. The Museum provided excellent food and some smooth jazz and invited all the docents who will be staffing the Guild Highlights exhibit for the next four months. It was interesting to note that as the art was being hung a narrative about tis collective meaning was created and installed by Deirdre Guevera and will be included in the docent tours descriptions of the exhibit. Included in the exhibit on a video loop was the video about the Guild, some of its history provided by Jody Abyssy and comments by Roxana Velasquez, Curator Hugh Davies PHD and myself, President of the Guild. That final video is now on YouTube https://youtu.be/9En1x337wF4?si=eP7dFkurKpI0dB-t. It was commissioned by the Guild board and completed by James Halfacre. Funds from artists membership dues were used for it. About 250 people were in attendance.

In addition to the video the Guild unveiled a full color catalogue with resumes and images by all 46 artists. Each artist was provided with one and the remainder will be on sale for $20.00 at the museum bookstore. All proceeds are returned to the Guild for future projects.

Then, as though that was not enough, the Guild opened another show in Balboa Park at Gallery 21 in Balboa Park on November 24-2:00-4:00. This show was juried by Alex DeCosta, Hyde Gallery and 40 artists were selected with three cash prizes and honorable mentions to three more. Thanks to all the Guild artists who volunteered to sit the gallery during the exhibit. The reception included refreshments, prize giving and an announcement of the upcoming Christmas get together at Gallery 21 on Dec. 1,4:00 to 6:00pm. Gifts will be exchanged, and Santa will be in attendance.

Be sure to consult the Guild website for the upcoming exhibit at Phes Gallery in Carlsbad. The exhibit will go from April 6-May 31 with an entry deadline of March 1.

You will recall the Board approved the effort to create an atelier/workshop in the Museum educational facility in the Prado in Balboa Park. Dates and schedule are being negotiated by VP Kevin Inman and Leslie Pierce. We look forward to your participation.

About Will:

After spending seven years in medical research, Will Gibson turned his photographic hobby into a vocation in 1979. He opened his own studio a year later. By 1999, the business was a full-service commercial studio with a full wet lab and one-stop desktop publishing. What followed next was a three-year sojourn based in Columbus, Ohio, where he concentrated on his personal photography, traveling the art fair circuit all over the American east.

Returning to Escondido, California, Gibson began teaching photography at Palomar College, and later also at UCSD Extension. During the next fifteen years he taught fifteen separate class titles, including Alternative Processes, Portraiture and Commercial Photography. He continued to exhibit his work in group and one-man shows, was a founding member of the PhotoArts Group in Escondido, co-produced six Best of Nature shows at the San Diego Natural History Museum and has been a speaker and juror in photo clubs in the greater San Diego area.

Gibson is currently showing his varied work in his Escondido studio and exploring wet-plate collodion and digital infrared photography.

About Vincent Munch: Vincent Munch is a close-up image of the exposed bark of a Ponderosa Pine Gibson calls the Survivor in Rocky Mountain National Park. This tree has been hit by lightning, burned and otherwise contorted by the elements over at least a hundred years. The image was captured digitally with the technique of focus stacking where multiple images at different focal distnces are used to create a composite of uniform sharpness and focus. The resulting image was inverted in values and printed on a clear material to create a suitable negative for a unique print in platinum and palladium on rag paper. The photographer sees elements of the paintings Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh and The Scream by Edvard Münch, hence the title.

About John:
I have been an architect with a private practice since 1983 specializing in the design of custom single-family homes. Starting in 2014, I have been making the professional transition into Fine Art. I am able to bring some of the unique skills acquired as an architect, into my oil paintings. My most recent work is an investigation into the human-condition. I have been exploring the aspects of man that distinguish humanity from machine as the line becomes increasingly blurred in the digital age. Stylistically best described as Abstract- Surrealism or Abstract-Realism.

General:

I paint with oil on linen. I used Fredrix acrylic primed linen that I stretch myself on 1 ¼” stretcher bars from Stretcher Bar Warehouse (you can buy online from central California factory). I use Princeton “Dakota’ 6300B paintbrushes (synthetic bristles. I mostly use Old Holland Paint or Windsor Newton. I use Utrecht alkyd glazing medium. The glazing medium allows me to build up many layers of paint over time. It also acts as an accelerator, so I can paint the next day. This painting is the product of about 20 sessions or layers. Each session is about 4 or 5 hours, not including painting the edges. The time between painting sessions gives me time to look at the work and plan the next move. I will work on a painting until I feel that I have little chance of making an improvement.

Starting with the blank canvas I will transfer the images using various means. Some freehand or carbon paper, plus I will use photographs that I have taken. From that point I will paint in the classic style. Light to dark. Front to back. Thin to thick. Which I learned from my only true painting teacher, Ardith Melzer. On my palette I will usually use two yellows, two reds, two blues and white. I always start a painting with black that I mix from the primaries. The darkest black I have found is using Prussian Blue and Cadmium Red Dark. After several painting sessions with different blacks, I will go straight to white tints to establish the highlights. I learned this from Norm Daniels, who is a plein air artist. He taught me that it is important to establish your lights right away, especially in plein air when the light is changing all the time. I know that I do not have the same time consideration, but it still helps to establish the composition early on. At this point I may start to see figures emerge from the canvas and I will need to draw over the canvas to bring them out. This will add more painting sessions in order to merge the added figures into the existing compositions. Once I have covered the whole canvas with paint, I will start all over and repaint it again several times. Each time sharpening the image and detailing as I go.

About MAINTENANCE: This painting entitled MAINTENANCE is part of a series that I have been working on for the last seven years and now totals over fifty paintings. I start the creative process by taking a number of photographs and superimposing them over each other. I spend a lot of time carefully moving the images around on my computer till I get the correct composition. I then transfer the image onto the primed linen canvas. During the painting process, I continue to distort and pixelate the image giving the impression of a technological interference. I invented this process and it is unique to this series.

MAINTENANCE was created during the holiday season. This time of year elicits mixed emotions. It can be both a fun and magical time of the year and also be very stressful and emotionally draining. And for some it is a period of religious introspection and devotion. I leave it up to the viewer to connect with this painting according to their personal experience.

Dear Members of the Artists Guild;

The Guild has finished the month with 135 members all resigned or new. Welcome to you all and I look forward to seeing your work in one of our exhibits or on the monthly zoom call. Thank you all for completing this annual ritual. We remain probably the largest practicing artists guild partnering with an art museum in the US. New members come mostly from San Diego but also throughout the US and Europe, a dynamic union.

Remember, all members are invited to our monthly Saturday morning zoom call where artists show and discuss their most interesting work, new and old. Over 40 members regularly participate. Join us. Just click on the zoom link you receive in your email monthly.

REMINDER- All artists juried into the MOPA/MOMA show must deliver their work to the back of MOPA on OCTOBER 28. The opening reception at the MOPA Museum is November 12^th. Wine, refreshments, speeches, a new Guild video and best of all member art, paintings and sculptures will be on display. This is the inaugural exhibit for the new Dannemeyer Community Gallery and not the last. The last time the Guild was exhibited in the Museum was 1997. So, let’s celebrate.

The San Diego Museum of Art-Artists Guild history is one of diversity, experiment and innovation. Guild visual artists, sculptors, and architects have played a major role in defining the artistic culture of the San Diego region for over 120 years. Its partnership with the Museum, starting with its inception, continues to present a national model of collaboration and community engagement.

This exhibit continues this tradition and presents a new generation of Museum/Guild exhibitions. The juried artists present a dynamic and eclectic survey of art styles, materials and ideas. It also premiers the art book “100 Artists,100 Years” featuring Guild artists both in and out of the Museum collection.

I am honored to be the incoming President of the Guild and look forward to many more outstanding exhibitions in and out of the San Diego Museum of Art and continuing to build artists membership and opportunities. It is my hope that the Guild will provide a dynamic community engagement opportunity for the Museum as well as Guild artists.

The Artists Guild will hold its annual
General Meeting on Saturday, June 8, 2024,
from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. PDT via Zoom.

We hope you will join us for this
important meeting.

During the meeting, you will receive updates on past and upcoming Guild activities and exhibitions.
Then, attending Artist Members will elect the
Board of Directors for the coming fiscal year.

Officers:
Guild vice president Jim Bliesner has agreed
to take over the Guild presidency
for the 2024/25 fiscal year.
Kevin Inman has agreed to step up as vice president.
Barbara Leitzel will continue her role as treasurer.
I will continue to serve as membership chair/exhibitions
co-chair and moderator of the
monthly Guild Zoom meetings.
Mark-Elliott Lugo has stepped down as board secretary but will continue to work with
Jody Abssy on the
History Committee and the completion of the
Guild’s Centennial Book.

Therefore, we need a board secretary to take minutes of the Guild’s monthly board meetings (first Tuesday of every month, from 10:15 a.m. to 12 noon).  This is an officer’s position. It would require approximately two hours to prepare the minutes.
If you are interested in serving as board secretary,
please contact me.

Katerina Husar Lazarova, our current webmaster,would like to step down but will remain webmaster until we have found a replacement. If you have technical skills and are interested in serving as Artists Guild webmaster, please contact me.  You do not have to become a board member (and attend monthly meetings) for this position.

Several board and Guild members have stepped up to assist me with exhibitions:
Jody Abssy, Jim Bliesner, Kevin Inman,
Leslie Pierce, Julie Weaverling

We also need more help with marketing, promotion
and hospitality.
There can be co-chairs for any position, or you may
only work on a small fraction of these positions.

Dear Members of the Artists Guild:

Last December, Guild president Annie Kilgore resigned due to personal reasons. We thank her for her service to the Guild. At our January board meeting, I was asked to serve Annie’s term through June 30, 2024 as interim president. In July, our vice president, Jim Bliesner, will take over as president of the Guild.

Artists Guild Membership Exhibition at MOPA@SDMA

Last month, I informed you that, after more than 20 years, the Guild has been invited by
The San Diego Museum of Art to have a membership exhibition at the new Museum of Photographic Arts at The San Diego Museum of Art (MOPA@SDMA) Community Gallery in Balboa Park. At that time, we were under the impression that the deadline to submit work would be in mid-July. Jim and I met with our Museum partners and juror, Dr. Hugh Davies, a few days ago and were told that, due to the many exhibitions and events the Museum is working on, the deadline for submissions has to move to a much earlier date: Friday, March 15, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. PDT.

While that does not leave much time to create new work, the good news is that any of your works are eligible for submission, even if they have been shown in Guild exhibitions before.
There will be no restrictions as to the year the works have been created.

We are in the process of finalizing the Call for Entries which will be published at the beginning of next week. Meanwhile, I would like to give you the following specifics for the exhibition so that you can start planning:

November 9, 2024 – March 9, 2025 - Live at the Museum of Photographic Arts
at The San Diego Museum of Art (MOPA@SDMA), Balboa Park
Online during the months of November 2024 through March 2025 on the Guild website.DEADLINE TO ENTER: Friday, March 15, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. PDT

Delivery of Artwork: Monday, October 28, 2024
Reception: Thursday November 14, 2024, 5 to 7 p.m., at MOPA@SDMA.

The reception will be shared with thePrix Pictet exhibition.

Juror: Hugh M. Davies, Ph.D.
Director Emeritus, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego

All current members of The San Diego Museum of Art Artists Guild are invited to submit work.
All media will be accepted (including digital art), except videos and other media requiring special installation. Artists may submit three works at $25 for the first entry, and $5 for each additional image. Since this will be a Museum exhibition, works will not be listed as “for sale.”
We will use the entrythingy.com platform for submissions.

SIZE LIMITATIONS: Two-dimensional art shall not exceed
42 inches in width and 60 inches in height, including the frame.
Gallery-wrapped artwork will be accepted if edges are painted.
Wall hung pieces may not exceed 30 pounds.
Three-dimensional art (Sculpture) shall not exceed 60 pounds.

Maximum size: 3 feet h x 2 feet w x 2 feet d.

The exhibition will be juried by Nancy Lim, Associate Curator, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Department of Painting & Sculpture.

Other Reminders: All members may attend our monthly board meetings on the first Tuesday of each month from 10:15 a.m. to 12 noon via Zoom, and our monthly Zoom meetings on the second Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Dear Members of the Artists Guild:

Happy New Year!

We would like to start 2024 with exciting news: After more than 20 years, the Guild has been invited by The San Diego Museum of Art to have a membership exhibition at the new Museum of Photographic Arts at The San Diego Museum of Art (MOPA@SDMA) Community Gallery. Last summer, the Museum of Photographic Arts and The San Diego Museum of Art merged to become one unified institution which is now called MOPA@SDMA. The Museum has dedicated one of the large galleries at MOPA@SDMA as a Community Gallery to reach out to regional artists, starting a new era for the Museum. Because of our long-time involvement and support of the Museum, the Guild will be the first to start this project in the beginning of October 2024 for five months - a fantastic opportunity for the Guild!

We have started the planning process and will provide more information as we move forward, but wanted to make you aware of this opportunity as soon as possible. Dr. Hugh M. Davies, Director Emeritus, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, has agreed to jury the exhibition. The prospectus will be online in mid-April and the deadline for submissions will be in mid-July.

Other upcoming Guild Exhibitions:

2024 Spring Online Open Exhibition for members and non-members

March 15 – May 15. 2024. We are in the process of finishing the prospectus.

2024 Holiday/Winter Online Exhibition for artist members only

November 1 – December 31, 2024.

2024 Fall Membership Exhibition at Gallery

November 19 – December 2, 2024.

We will continue our monthly Zoom meetings on the second Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 12 noon Pacific Time and encourage you to join us. We started these meetings at the beginning of the COVID pandemic and they have become very popular. We usually have between 30 to 35 artists on the call sharing their works, not only from the San Diego area but as far away as Canada, Alaska, New York, Texas and Europe. Images of shared works are posted on the Guild Facebook page, www.sdmaag.org and click on FB. This is a great way to meet your fellow artists, see their works and share yours.

The next Zoom meeting will take place on Saturday, January 13, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon PST. If you are interested in participating, please RSVP to gelikavillagrana@gmail.com to receive the Zoom link.

Guild members are also invited to join our monthly Board of Directors meetings. Normally on the first Tuesday of each month from 10:15 a.m. to 12 noon Pacific Time, we have moved the January meeting to Tuesday, January 9, because of the holidays. Dear Members:

Due to health reasons, Sue Zinngrabe Gold had to resign as Guild treasurer and editor of the newsletter. Luckily for us, she will remain on the Guild board of directors and be available with advice. Vice president Annie Kilgore has agreed to step us as interim treasurer and newsletter editor, however, since it is taking a while to get her set up, the newsletter will be delayed by a month.

Annie will take over as Guild president in July, therefore

we urgently need volunteers to take on the treasurer and newsletter positions.

Please let me know if you are interested in volunteering for either position and we can discuss the duties that are involved. Thanks so much.

Exhibitions:

Many thanks to all artists who submitted work to our 2023 Online Spring Exhibition. We received 712 entries from 316 artists from around the world. Our juror, Hugh M. Davies, Ph.D., Director Emeritus, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, had the difficult task of selecting 110 works from an abundance of high-quality submissions for the exhibition. I am pleased to announce that 18 Guild members were included.

The award winners are:

First place: Bart Lindstrom from Rancho Mirage, CA, for his oil painting Running Men.

Second place: Sandy Abrams from Long Beach, CA, for her rattan, bamboo, wood sculpture Reclining Nude.

Third place: Guild member Michael Hill from Escondido, CA, for his oil painting Spring Shower. Michael has donated his $300 award towards the Guild’s Centennial Book Project. We appreciate that very much.

Dear Members:

Many thanks to all of you who participated in our 2022 Fall Membership Exhibition, which was held at Gallery 21, Balboa Park, from September 13 through September 26, and online on the Guild website during the month of September. It was wonderful seeing many of you at the September 18 reception at Gallery 21. Juror Julie Weaverling, Director of the Front Porch Gallery in Carlsbad, joined us and announced the award winners. President's Message

Dear Members:

We held our Annual Membership Meeting via Zoom on June 11. Many thanks to all of you who took time to join us and vote for the board of directors candidates for our upcoming fiscal year (July 1, 2022, through June 30, 2023) and the revisions to our bylaws.

There were a few changes to the make-up of our board. After four years of serving as President of the Guild, Sue Zinngrabe Gold stepped down from this role. Since nobody volunteered to assume the President position, I agreed to serve one more time as Guild President for one year. (I served as President from 2012 to 2018).

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Sue for her years of dedication and her enormous work on behalf of the Guild, especially during these challenging COVID years. Thanks for doing such a fantastic job, Sue!. I am very happy to report that we will not lose her. Sue has agreed to remain on our board of directors, assume the role of Guild Treasurer, continue as Exhibitions Committee co-chair, Centennial Book administrator, serve on the Website Committee and compile the Guild Newsletter. All in all, she does not get much of a break, but we are very glad that she will continue to work with us on our Guild agenda.

After many years as Treasurer and Webmaster, Julianne Ricksecker has stepped down from these positions, but she will remain on the board as Member-at-Large and will still assist us with technical advice. We also owe her many thanks for all her work. Katerina Husar Lazarova is our new Webmaster.

President's Message

Dear Members,

This letter will be my last as president of the San Diego Museum of Art Artists Guild. These four years have been fulfilling and demanding. I have enjoyed being your president and feel we have accomplished much. Our relationship with the Museum has improved. We have just presented to The Museum a 3-ring binder that contains the work and bios of most of our artist members. The Museum had expressed a desire to know more about the Artists Guild and its artist members. The centennial book, 100 Artists, 100 Years: A Century of Creativity in San Diego, will be published this year. There have been many delays in publishing this book, not the least of which has been getting permission from the artist, family, or heirs to use an image of the artist's work. All of our exhibitions have been successful. All in all, it has been a good and productive four years. My plan is to continue on the Artists Guild board of directors as the treasurer and immediate past president. So, I'll still be around!

Hopefully, 2022 will be a much better year.

The Artists Guild looks forward to a new online exhibition in 2022. Our SPRING EXHIBITION prospectus is on our website right now at https://www.sdmaag.org/sys/website/?pageId=18376 and is open to all artists worldwide. Please enter this show! Members have a discounted price. Choose the member price when paying. This exhibition will be online from March 1 to April 30, 2022. The juror for this exhibition is G. James Daichndt, Ed. D. Read about him in the prospectus. Please submit your best work. You will be allowed to submit three (3) works and of these, two (2) can be chosen. See the prospectus for details about what is accepted and how to enter.

We will be showing a few members' works in the Museum sometime in 2024 in the admission-free gallery next to Panama 66. The works shown will be of the Museum's choosing.

Dear Members,

The Artists Guild is hosting a "LIVE" members-only show (Transitions) with a live reception at The Center for the Performing Arts at 15498 Espola Road, Poway, CA 92064, on Sunday, November 7, 2021, from 2 to 4 pm. PLEASE COME TO THE RECEPTION. We will also show this exhibition online on our website until the end of December.

There is an opportunity for a teaching artist familiar with traditional photographic techniques to perform a one-time in-gallery tutorial for the upcoming Masters of Photography show (opening Nov. 20^th). The Museum would like this person to demonstrate a photographic technique related to the exhibition live in front of an audience. This technique would have to be dry, with no liquids or inks. There could even be an art-making activity for guests as well. The Museum wants to film the experience so they could publish it on various social media platforms and websites. This would be a wonderful way for The Museum to discover what Artist Guild members are capable of. Is there an Artists Guild member or associate who would like to take this opportunity? If so, please call me at 858-717-5414.

There will be an Artists Guild online international exhibition coming up in March and April 2022. The prospectus for this "open" exhibition will be on our website very soon. Look for it, and please enter.

The San Diego Museum of Art will show a few members' works in the Museum sometime in 2024 in the admission-free gallery next to Panama 66. The works shown will be of the Museum's choosing.

Jeffrey R. Brosbe: In Memoriam October 30, 1945-April 24, 2021

In memory of artist Jeffrey R. Brosbe the La Jolla Art Association will be hosting a reception honoring his life and work.

We also would like to thank Yung Chieng Wang (Arthur) for graciously allowing us to display Jeffrey’s work and for allowing the sale of his work.

Jeffrey’s work will be on exhibit in the Great Room through June 29 at the La Jolla Community Center.  The name of this installation is“Arboreal Impressions”.  There will also be an installation of many of his other colorful travel photographs in two other areas of the Center through the month of July.  These photographs reveal Jeffrey’s work spanning many years and destinations in which he artfully captured the profound beauty, light, and lives of India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, China. Tibet, Egypt, and Israel.

Reception date: Friday, June 18, 2021

Time: 1 PM to 4 PM.

Refreshments and light appetizers will be served.

About Jeffrey:

Other than his passion for photography Jeffrey was an avid student of archeology and history (UCLA) and was a literature instructor at San Dieguito High School in Encinitas where he taught for 33 years starting at the young age of 23.

For years he actively served on the board of the La Jolla Art Association, the Allied Artists Association of San Diego, and the Off Track Gallery.  His archival photographic prints have been selected in international juried exhibitions; national juried exhibitions in museums, colleges, and universities; and juried exhibitions throughout San Diego County, winning special recognition and awards in almost all of them.

In 1997 he was chosen by the City of Carlsbad Arts Commission as one of the first to do a major installation. His most recent honors include being selected by Black and White magazine for the 2017 Single Image Awards issue and given the special recognition award by the Photo Arts Group for work submitted to the International Exhibition of Photography in Del Mar (California) in 2016.

He says: “Visually, my work is built around shape, light, and shadow. The essence of my images however are moments in time which, in their contemplation, communicate my personal response to the world which is sometimes a wry, ironic smile; at others awestruck; and sometimes in a realm between these poles. The creation of an image is the same as the creation of a Haiku: It should be whole and meaningful in itself while providing greater insight when pondered further.”  See more at  jeffreyrbrosbe.com

Dear Members,

Finally, we have vaccines available. Let's hope we are soon able to get back to normal. Hopefully, this will happen sooner rather than later.

The Artists Guild has decided to continue with online shows for now. The prospectus for our Summer Exhibition is live on our website. The Exhibition will be open to all and we will accept any and all media. See the prospectus for details. The juror for this exhibition is Anita Feldman, the Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs at The San Diego Museum of Art.

President's Message

Dear Members,

Happy New Year to you. We all certainly hope that 2021 is a much better year!

This time we live in is unprecedented. We have been living with this pandemic for about ten months now and, for sure, we are getting tired of staying home, wearing a mask and social distancing when we go out. A couple of vaccines have been approved, but it will be a while before everyone is vaccinated. We have all learned how to order things and have them delivered. We are having Zoom meetings and learning new ways to live with technology. Some of this will stay with us even after the pandemic is over. We are learning new ways to cope. Right now, all we can do is hang in there, and do our best to stay busy at home and be very careful when going out.

Bonnie Roth: Express Yourself

Bonnie Roth shared how she creates her amazing clay portraits with the many artist at the October 10 Virtual Artists Discussion. Each piece has such a strong personality which suggests a whole life lived and captured by their expression. Bonnie showed us some of her finished pieces and then demonstrated how she works. There were many questions from interested artist.

He and his wife Ada have recently returned to China after enjoying their tenure in San Diego. She was invaluable narrating the philosophy and symbolism behind so many of his paintings.

Dear Members,

Well, here we are, we're all living in isolation and Zooming! This may go on for a while, so we have to make the best of it. I hope you and your families are well, and doing the best you can to stay occupied.

In view of everything that is going on, the Artists Guild board and exhibition committee will decide whether or not to hold our open exhibition at Gallery 21 in December. We could do an online only show. Look for a future announcement. And check with the Artists Guild website. We will NOT have a reception. Too many of our members are at risk, and there is no safe way to handle a big party.

Drawn from the Museum’s collection, Bound to the Earth: Art, Materiality, and the Natural Worldlooks at the ways in which artists have addressed and represented the landscape. Faiya Fredman, one of the 100 artists celebrated in our book, 100 Artists, 100 Years: A Century of Creativity in San Diego is featured in this important exhibition. Many works are made with earthen materials such clay and tar, sticks and soil; others focus on the natural resources that constitute our environment.

Roxanna Maria, 1949-2019

The Artists Guild is sad to announce the passing of member Roxanna Maria on December 4.

Roxanna Maria was a figurative artist who created full body sculptures in clay, polymer and paper clay. She embellished her work with antiques fabrics as well as modern pieces of metal jewelry and other textiles to bring her pieces to life. For the past 20 years, Roxanna Maria embraced her craft and became well known in the industry for the realism that her art conveys. A self taught sculptor, Roxanna began sculpting in the early nineties. Her works have been published worldwide receiving high accolades and numerous prestigious awards. Roxanna was welcomed into the Guild as a prize winner from the San Diego County Fair and quickly became an active member, serving on the Board for a time. She will be missed.

Photographer Julius Shulman is recognized for his work in Los Angeles and Palm Springs. It is not widely known that between 1934 and 2007, Shulman (1910 – 2009) shot over 200 projects in San Diego. His clients were architects, publishers, construction companies, and developers. The list includes notable San Diego architects Lloyd Ruocco, Richard Wheeler, Henry Hester, Robert Mosher and Frederick Liebhardt.

Shulman’s work, spanning several decades, documents the region’s evolving 20th century architectural landscape and his instrumental role in sharing California’s unique post-War modernism with a wide audience. However, his images of San Diego have not been widely shared or published. This exhibition will present selected photographs from Julius Shulman’s projects in San Diego, represented in both vintage and contemporary prints, and ephemera that contextualize this historically significant work. This exhibit is curated by Keith York.

Barry Feinman: Found Object Art

Barry Feinman, Principal, Restoration ArTechs, Inc.

Barry Feinman gave a fascinating presentation to the Artists Guild at its August 10 Liberty Station meeting. He talked about his company, Restoration ArTechs, Inc., which is in the business of architectural and artistic surface restoration. Barry and his team have restored numerous bronze statures in Southern California, including Two Oceans in downtown San Diego and Don Diego at the San Diego County Fair. With regard to his own art, Barry uses found objects to create his artwork. The Artists Guild chose his recycled work “Sunflower” for a 2019 membership award at the San Diego County Fair. The attached presentation shows some of the company’s restoration projects before and after restoration, Barry’s trip to the desert to collect discarded objects and examples of how the objects look like after he has treated them with patina chemicals

President's Message
The History Committee is working hard on the centennial book 100 Artists, 100 Years: A Century of Creativity in San Diego. We should have all the permissions in hand and copy and layouts to the printer by mid-Summer and hopefully be able to launch the book at The San Diego Museum of Art Reception in the Fall. All Artists Guild members will be invited to the reception and donors will receive their copies of the book.

The Artists Guild has met its goal for funding the book as mentioned in the previous newsletter. We are, however, still accepting donations as costs have gone up and there are unforeseen expenses.   If you wish, you can donate on our website: www.sdmaag.org  or contact me at:  president@sdmaag.org

Our exhibitions at the Lyceum Theatre and Gallery 21 were very successful. The Artists Guild sold over $8,000 worth of artwork and had an enthusiastic crowd of viewers at the exhibitions.

A big thank you goes to the members of the exhibition committee: John Oleinik, Angelika Villagrana, Ray Brownfield, Janet Lee and Susan Ashley for making these exhibitions possible.

We are also looking forward to the next exhibition at Mission Trails Visitor Center August-September 2019. Details to come on that one.

We will have our annual meeting at Liberty Station on the second Saturday in June (the 8th). We'll send members a letter with all the details.

The Artists Guild annual meeting is when we vote on the board of directors for the next fiscal year (July1, 2019 - June 30, 2020). Now is the time to notify us of your nominations for board and committee positions.  Please plan on being at our annual meeting. You will have fun at the party, meet other artists and hear about all the goings on at the Artists Guild.

Also, please come to our next board meeting, Tuesday, May 7, from 10:15am till noon in the museum board room. Find out how we work together and what currently has our attention. Add your ideas and concerns.

President's Message

We have wonderful news: We received a substantial gift from an "angel," who wants to remain anonymous, that put us over the top and we can now print the Artists Guild Centennial Book. So, we are in the production stage and working closely with the printer and SDMA. More on this as we progress.

If any of you were thinking of donating, there is always the possibility that we might need more than our $40,000 budget, especially since the printer is about to send us an updated estimate! So, we are still accepting donations. If you wish, you can donate on our website: www.sdmaag.org

Members Exhibition at Gallery 21, Spanish Village, Balboa Park is on display now through November 5, 2018. To see this exhibition online go to www.sdmaag.org, click on “Exhibitions” and then “2018 Membership Exhibition."

Art Center on the Square --Clairemont Square Exhibition.  Members who entered the Gallery 21 exhibition are eligible to show one piece of work at Art Center on the Square, 4809 Clairemont Drive. The Artists Guild has one wall at this exhibition -- November 5 through January 4, 2019. Work will be on the wall for one of four two-week periods. President's Message

The Artists Guild starts a new year on July 1, 2018. We are increasing our membership and building on the good foundation made by those before us. I personally want to thank Angelika Villagrana for her extended term as president from 2012 to 2018 and for the wonderful programs and exhibits she initiated.

We have just had a beautiful exhibition at the Poway Center for Performing Arts, juried by Ariel Plotek, former curator of contemporary art at SDMA.

Upcoming exhibitions are: October 23 - November 5, 2018 -- members exhibition at Gallery 21 in Spanish Village, Balboa Park. Juror to be announced
February 19 - March 25, 2019 members exhibition at the San Diego Repertory Theatre/ Lyceum, Horton Plaza, downtown San Diego. Juror to be announced.

Our April Artists Discussion group was well attended and enthusiastically received. Artists were hungry to learn more about "How to Present Your Artwork and Get Connected!" Many thanks to our presenter, Alessandra Moctezuma, Gallery Director and Museum Studies Professor at San Diego Mesa College.

San Diego Mesa College offers the only hands on program in Museum Studies and Gallery Exhibition Skills

. In the courses students learn from arts professionals and discover what goes on behind-the-scenes in local museums and arts organizations. Artists can learn to present and promote their work and get connected with the San Diego art scene.

Professor Alessandra Moctezuma has an extensive background working as an artist, as a founder of arts collectives, as a public arts manager, and as a curator. Working in arts organizations, Professor Moctezuma learned many skills that were not taught in art school or studio art classes. She designed courses that offer an overview of the art world and allow students and interested artists to develop skills to succeed as professionals. Making art is essential but getting the work out into the world is crucial!

Dr. Plotek oversees Modern and Contemporary art at The San Diego Museum of Art. His main area of expertise is 19th- and 20th-century painting and sculpture. Dr. Plotek has collaborated with contemporary artists such as Ron Nagle and Richard Deacon; taught the History of Modern Art at the University of San Diego; and served as the editor of Tabula Quarterly—an online review of exhibitions and books on art. Prior to San Diego, Dr. Plotek worked at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He specialized in Modern art at the University of London, and received his Ph.D. from NYU’s Institute of Fine Art, completing his dissertation in Paris under the aegis of the Sorbonne.

Presentation by Dr. Ariel Plotek, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, The San Diego Museum of Art

The exhibition, currently on view on the second floor of the Museum in the Maxwell & Muriel Gluck Gallery, features modern masterpieces by Pierre Bonnard, Amedeo Modigliani, and Edouard Vuillardand forms the nucleus of a group of paintings from the school of Paris. Also included in the exhibition are works by Edgar Degas and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and a number of significant loans from the Bloomberg Collection. Together, these works present a portrait of Paris from the 1870s to the first decades of the 20^th century, when the legacy of Impressionism remained a significant source of inspiration.

At 11 a.m., Hyacinthe Kuller Baron will give us a drawing demonstration.

Master Artist Hyacinthe Kuller Baron is a contemporary American Woman with works in the Smithsonian, and many other museums, corporate and celebrity collections. A contemporary of the New York School of Artists, Marcel Duchamp called her “A genius draftsman.” She taught John Lennon to create his suite Bag One. She produced hundreds of limited edition original signed and numbered lithographs that sold at art auctions and art galleries world-wide. Hyacinthe conducts Drawing and Painting Workshops based on her published books Seeking The Silent Stranger, Drawing Your Way into the Deeper Self, and Creativity. Her sense of movement is captured with only the essential lines and inferred sense of form. The light and trade washes are the trademark of Master Artist Hyacinthe Kuller Baron whose influences have been Marcel Duchamp, Michelangelo and Raphael. Now 80 years of age, she creates new collections of works, incorporating sculpture and painting in her studio at the Studio Door in North Park, San Diego. Artists Profile: Renata Spiazzi and The Seven Arts mural at La Jolla High

Born in Italy, Renata Spiazzi had a passion for the arts at a very early age, but when WWII came she had to learn shorthand and typing in a hurry. “My father was a seaman and his ship was under the British, while my mother, my sister and I were under the Germans. I had to find a job to be able to support them,” she recalls. After the war, Renata got married and moved to California, and soon was back into perfecting her craft. She finished her education in Arts & Crafts, and worked in an artist’s studio.

In 1939, Belle Baranceanu painted a mural called “The Seven Arts” on the Auditorium wall at La Jolla High School. She also did a wall at the La Jolla Post Office. They were all part of the WPA project. The Auditorium was demolished in 1976 because it was declared unsafe. Belle died in 1988 and was extremely saddened by the demolition of the school mural, which she considered her best work.

In 2000, La Jolla High School’s graduating class of 1960 was considering a gift to the school. Sandy Brabon and Ida Jessop, both graduates of the 1960 class, were asked to do a mural as a gift to the school. They were painters of murals found mostly in restaurants here in San Diego and south of the border.

The graduating class asked the two ladies to reproduce the mural on the wall of the new Parker auditorium, but there was a problem with the placement of the figures. The mural done by Belle was around the face of the stage, while in the new auditorium, the proposed wall was a long horizontal strip of 90’ in length and 9’ in height.

They had never been faced with anything this huge, and came to Renata Spiazzi asking if she knew what could be done. Belle had placed “The Seven Arts” around the face of the stage. As soon as Renata saw the image she knew the solution. “I made a scale model of the new wall, and placed “The Seven Arts” on it." The grid for the design was done 1” = 1’. Brabon and Jessop enlarged the design accordingly.

It turned out to be a handsome project. “We are all very proud to have preserved Belle’s Masterpiece. Although Belle was not there for the dedication, she definitely has a smile on her face now.”

Renata's own work has recently received an honor when she was named by MOCA, the Museum of Computer Art, as one of only 17 "Grandmasters of Digital Art". According to the museum, this selection was carefully made after study of the thousands of artists who have exhibited on their site in the 19 years since its founding.
