Artist's Bio

"Art is born of the observation and investigation of nature."  Cicero

Whether I paint in expressionist or abstract styles the object of my art is not to reproduce nature, but to define the essence, energies, and intensity of nature. I want to create paintings that draw the viewer to them and possible trigger a significant event or joy in their lives. I was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania and the surrounding landscape, painters and writers within that region of the country inspired my early work.  Once I moved my home to southwestern California, I realized that my paintings were influenced and transformed by the amount of light and environmental conditions that exist in the open chaparral of the backcountry in Jamul. My home and studio/gallery are located on ten acres of open native vegetation.  Everyday I am influenced by nature’s changing scenes, and so I find my work originates from these visuals nature offers.  I do tend to work in a themed series, often starting with a concept or image. Sometimes I will have a title in mind and then develop a painting around it. Often a painting will grow from a 4"x4" pencil sketch.  I frequently work on multiple paintings at a time.  The reason I work with several paintings in process is that I wish to expand the concept, see it evolving, and to keep the work fresh and impulsive. Currently I am working in large scale, while extending the acrylic painting process with paper tissues, sand, pumice, fiberglass sheets, gels, varnishes, and recycled materials.  My goal is to create layers of textures and color.  For the past several years I have been studying the large boulders that rise above the chaparral.  In my present body of work I am attempting to translate the mood and magic of these boulders and to welcome the viewer into the painting.
