Artist's Statement

I paint outdoors  most often in Mission Trails Preserve, near my home in San Diego. The California landscape of distant mountains, dry stony washes and the diversity, fragility and hardiness of the chaparral and play of light at different times of the day and season changes constantly.I record these fleeting impressions in the drag, mark and layering of pastel on paper. I use these references in larger studio oil paintings.

I am especially drawn to wilderness terrain. My plein air paintings record the textures, energy and surprises I find in California coastal pastoral and other locations. I travel back to South Africa and to other countries around the world widely, always with supplies of pastel and paper at the ready, seizing opportunities to stop and paint - to experience deeply and record the impression and image of the day.
