Entry Guidelines 

ELIGIBILITY AND RESTRICTIONS: The competition is open to all artists. Artwork must have been completed within the last 5 years.  Open to all media except video and performance art. To be eligible for inclusion in the Lyceum Gallery exhibition, work must be framed or gallery wrapped, suitable for display and must not exceed 30” x 40” including frame. Glass is not acceptable. Sculpture must not exceed 40 pounds and 6 feet in any direction.  Any work that does not match the digital image in quality or content will be rejected from the exhibition. Juror may select additional work for inclusion in the online exhibition only. 

JUROR: Derrick Cartwright was director of The San Diego Museum of Art from 2004 to 2009, when he left to take the director position at the Seattle Art Museum. Cartwright holds art history degrees from UC Berkeley, UCLA and the University of Michigan and has taught at UC Berkeley, Dartmouth College (where he was director of the Hood Museum of Art), UC San Diego and USD. He has also led major art institutions in Giverny, France, in Hanover, New Hampshire, San Diego, and Seattle before returning to USD in the fall of 2012 to fill a newly created position as Director of University Galleries and Professor of Practice. Cartwright has published dozens of scholarly articles and catalogue essays about American painting, sculpture, photography, Franco-American Cultural Exchange, and contemporary issues in American art museums. 

ENTRY FEES:  The entry fee is $35.00 for one artwork and $10 for each additional artwork. Artist Guild member’s entry fee is discounted 30% ($24.50 for one artwork and $7 for each additional work).  Submission is made online by digital JPG image files. Artists may submit up to 5 entries.

DEADLINE: Entry fees & Artwork must be submitted no later than July 29, 2013.  

EXHIBITION TERMS: All works in the show must be for sale through the close of the exhibition (October 13, 2013). Price is determined by the artist. The Artists Guild will retain 35% commission on all sales. Awards will be selected from the actual artwork and announced at the awards presentation on September 13, 2013.

IMAGE USE / COPYRIGHTS:  Artist retains all copyrights to submitted images and represented artwork.  Digital images submitted with artist entry are for selection, exhibition and marketing purposes for this exhibition only. By entering the competition, all artists grant Artists Guild the right to use the selected image(s) on printed materials and the gallery web site for promotional purposes only. The online gallery for Contemporary Exressionism – The Creative Spirit will be archived for online viewing (but not for sales) following the close of the exhibition. The Artists Guild retains no copyrights to artists work.   

NOTIFICATION:  Artists will be notified of acceptance August 19, 2013. Accepted entry list will be posted at: www.sdmaag.org/contemporary-expressionism-results. Notification will be made via email and by posting on the results page. 

LIABILITY: Each artist must carry their own insurance for shipping and handling during the Contemporary Expressionism - The Creative Spirit exhibition. Care will be taken in handling all entries. The Guild will not be responsible for loss or damage of any kind for any entry submitted. Submitting art to this exhibit acknowledges agreement on the part of the artist to the terms and conditions set forth in this prospectus. The Artists Guild may rescind the right of hanging or displaying any art misrepresented or unsuitably presented. 

 

SHIPPING: Shipping or Hand Delivery Instructions will be provided to accepted artists in their acceptance confirmation email. Shipping costs are the responsibility of the artist.

 

SHIPPING DATES:  

August 27, 28 29 Acceptance of Shipped Artwork 

September 4   Hand delivered work drop off 10-11:30am

 

All shipped work will be packed and shipped the week following the close of show.

 

ENTRY SUBMISSION GUIDELINES All entries are submitted online. Images should be uploaded in JPEG (.jpg) format of at least 700 px on the short side, and less than 2 MB.  Entry fee will be paid through the Artists Guild shopping cart prior to uploading your entry.  

 

In order to participate in an Artists Guild competition, you must have a Participant Profile registered on our site.  If you do not have an account on the site, please first Create a Guest Account. Then follow these simple steps:  (Artists Guild Members, your information will be pulled from your existing artist’s profile. Please follow the steps below to verify the contact information and add your phone number.) 

  1. Login to the site.
  2. Click My Account
  3. Click the Edit tab
  4. Click Participant Info tab
  5. Fill in all required information and 
  6. Click SAVE

    This Participant Info profile will be used for this and any future SDMAAG competition that you enter. You only need to complete this information once.

Now you are ready to enter the competition!

After completing your payment, return to the SDMAAG website to continue uploading your artwork entry.

  1. Login if you are not already logged in.
  2. Click on My Account
  3. Click View Participation tab
  4. Click link to Add New Entry.
  5. Select the name of the competition from the drop down list.
  6. Enter information for each entry and upload your image.
  7. SAVE your entry. Saving submits your entry to the competition. You may return to the View Participation tab to review or edit your entry as many times as you like until the entry deadline.
